And another load of misinformation is about to be peddled as fact. Yes there is a tweet going around about the Smith Sighting and the McCanns not doing anything about it.. via their private detectives.
Well, let us lay that one to bed.. shall we?
Within the Police Files there is correspondence from Sgt Liam Hogan
Re – Investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
I took an additional statement from Mr Smith as requested. His wife does not want to make another statement. I showed him the video clip and he stated that it was not the clip that alerted him but the BBC news at 10 PM on 9th September 2007.
He has been contacted by numerous tabloid press looking for stories. He has been contacted by Mr Brian Kennedy who is supporting the McCann family to take part in a photo fit exercise. He has given no stories or helped in any photo fits. He sent a solicitor’s letter to six papers in relation material that was printed that was misquoted. The Evening Herald paid his solicitor’s fees and all papers printed an apology. His photograph appeared in another tabloid paper and this matter is being pursued at the moment.
I do not believe that Martin Smith is courting the press and my view his is a genuine person. He is known locally and is a very decent person.
We know that Brian Kennedy approved the McCanns private detectives to lead the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance. We also know from the correspondence above that Martin Smith did NOT help Brian Kennedy by giving a photofit of the person he saw that evening.
So I ask myself, would it have been worth the Private Investigators contacting Mr Smith again? Perhaps so, but could it have led to problems with regards to allegations of badgering a potential witness? Probably.
However my not-so friendly tweeter (who will be blocked in a minute) has replied with this tweet
Again I refer them to the files, in which Brian Kennedy gave his reasons to the PJ his reasons for wanting to find this child.. He document says:
On the 13th of the current year, in the presence of the signatory and inspectors Paulo Ferreira and Ricardo Paiva, a meeting was held, in this department, with Brian Kennedy, the director of the detective company, Francisco Marco and an advisor of this same company, Antonio Jimenez, ex-chief of the Kidnapping Unit of Catalan. From the beginning, Brian Kennedy was questioned, and ascertained that the meeting only had this scope–of transmitting that his objective in all of this was purely charitable in that he is interested [in helping to stop] the bad treatment of minors and in missing children. He affirmed that he only was interested in discovering the truth and nothing more even if the McCann family, the friends, or any other person is found to be involved in the disappearance.
Clearly my not-so friendly tweeter hasn’t read the files otherwise they would have known why he wanted to help.. Nothing suspicious at all is there?.. The McCanns received many offer of help from many people,.. and that help ranged from appeals, to financial assistance.. When someone is faced with a tragedy like a child going missing people from all walks of life want to help.
Just because someone has a heart and wants to help.. it doesn’t mean they are involved or trying to cover something up.
Added to the fact that the McCann family knew the PJ weren’t looking for Madeleine and all they were interested in was trying to make them confess to a crime they did NOT commit, it is hardly surprising that people wanted to help. Brian Kennedy was wealthy and he did what he could to try and help find a missing child. Instead of praise he is condemned and classed as highly suspicious..
In fact there was one witness who was prepared to meet the artist sent by Mr Brian Kennedy and do a photo-fit. That person being:
