The Find Madeleine Fund, Website, and Trademark

Trademark symbol

There is much condemnation of how Kate and Gerry McCann quickly set up a website, registered a Company and Trademarked that Company name.

We know that the International Family Law Group were in Praia da Luz within days of Madeleine’s disappearance and we know that the McCanns set up the Find Madeleine – Leaving No Stone Unturned fund non-profit Company on the 15th May 2007.  And the trademark was granted on the 18th May 2007 according to Intellectual Property Office.

Some say this is so wrong, but when the lawyers arrived I suspect they advised the McCanns to take this action, so that they do not end up in a situation that Mitch Winehouse finds himself in with regards to the Foundation he wants to set up in his daughter’s memory.

According to the Sun:

Martin McCann bought the domain name Amywinehousefoundation.com – hours after her dad Mitch revealed plans to set up a foundation for drug addicts.

McCann also paid £160 to register the Amy Winehouse Foundation Ltd with Companies House on August 2, despite having never met her or Mitch.

See it just goes to show, even though what he has done is not illegal, it is very immoral.  And anybody with a conscience would never think of doing this but as Martin McCann said:

Detach yourself from emotions and think business.

But due to Martin McCann’s actions Mitch Winehouse has had to return donations because he can’t set a bank account up in the name of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, the Sun says:

The Sun tracked him down after ex-cabbie Mitch revealed how he was forced to return donations to fans because he was unable to set up a bank account in that name.

It is simple really when you think about it, people were offering money to the McCanns to help them and the lawyers would have got things rolling pretty quick in order to stop some unscrupulous person from doing exactly the same as Martin McCann did.

It just goes to show what lengths some people will go to, to cash in on a tragedy.  Mitch Winehouse is also having to try and stop people cashing in on his daughter’s death, the Sun reveals:

Mitch wants to crack down on unlicensed products cashing in on his girl’s death – including an “RIP Amy” T-shirt.

Mind you if my memory serves me correctly, didn’t some well known blogger at one time buy and sell domain names that were associated with the Tapas group and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.  Well they did according to this site.

And it’s no wonder that the McCann’s took the advice of the lawyers, they would have been stupid not too.

And by the way, there is no connection between Kate & Gerry McCann and this Martin McCann, so don’t bother looking for the conspiracy theory cos it just doesn’t exist.  Mind you I suspect someone will invent one before the day is out and the internet world will see another forum myth born.

  1. Hi Bren,

You may not remember, but shortly after her disappearance, there were donation scams set up. Unfortunately, I don’t think I kept any proof. From memory, there was at least one fraudulent site as well as fraudulent street collections.

I didn’t realise it at the time, but it is a sad fact that scams are set up within hours of an event likely to pull on people’s heart and purse  strings.

They were lucky that they’d been given the right advice quickly.

  2. Hi Carana

Now you come to mention it, yes I can remember something about that.

I found something about the internet scams
