Madeleine’s Eye Defect

All credit for this post has to go to Carana.  If it had not been for her vigilance then another forum myth would have continued to do the rounds.

There is much being said about the McCanns sealing Madeleine’s fate by disclosing to the public her eye defect.  There are many that say that by the McCann’s advertising that Madeleine had an eye defect it would put her in a precarious situation and it could ultimately lead to her being killed for fear of recognition.

Now if it had not been for Carana this would have gone unnoticed.

On the 4th May 2007  Goncalo (or someone else signing his name) asks the Public Ministry for permission to issue a Press Release to the media about Madeleine’s disappearance.

The Policia Judiciaria requests information about the whereabouts of Madeleine Beth McCann, born on 12-05-2003 (three years old) with the following physical characteristics: 90 cm in height, light chestnut/blond hair, blue/green left eye and a green right eye with a brown mark in the pupil.

She disappeared from Praia da Luz, Lagos on 03-05-2007 wearing pyjamas with white coloured bottoms with a floral design and a blue and grey figure on the front with the inscription ‘EEYORE’.

Any information should be directed to the Head of the Faro PJ telephone number 289 884 500 or to the Portimao DIC tel 282 405 400.

05 May 2007

There it is in bold above the PJ were the ones that mentioned Madeleine’s eye defect as early as the 4th May 2007 in a letter that says it was signed by Goncalo Amaral.

At 10pm on the 4th May Gerry McCann speaks to the Press, he says:

‘Words cannot describe the anguish and despair that we are feeling as the parents of our beautiful daughter Madeleine. We request that anyone who may have any information related to Madeleine’s disappearance, no matter how trivial, contact the Portuguese police and help us get her back safely. Please, if you have Madeleine, let her come home to her mummy, daddy, brother and sister. As everyone can understand how distressing the current situation is, we ask that our privacy is respected to allow us to continue assisting the police in their current investigation.’

No mention whatsoever by Gerry McCann about Madeleine’s eye defect.

Update:

The first campaign video was shown on the 16th May 2007 at the UEFA cup held in Glasgow.

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/brit-is-named-as-a-suspect-in-hunt-for-madeleine-1.948663

A DRIVE to support the hunt for missing toddler Madeleine McCann, above, is receiving vital help from Uefa Cup final organisers.

The girl’s uncle, John McCann, the brother of Madeleine’s dad Gerry, called upon the local organising committee of the Hampden final, who have offered help to publicise the search.

Giant screens, supporters buses and access to fan zones have been arranged to highlight the continuing search. With almost 30,000 Sevilla FC and RCD Espanyol fans due in the city for tomorrow night’s final at Hampden, the match provides an international platform for the McCann family.

The committee has given the family access to Glasgow City Marketing Bureau’s media centre for the final in The Lighthouse, Scotland’s architecture and design centre, to distribute publicity material to the international media.

While the fans are in the city, details of the campaign to find Madeleine will appear on the screen on top of the Royal Concert Hall, on two large screens in George Square and on the city’s community television network.

A prayer vigil for her safe return takes place at St Paul’s RC Church on Shettleston Road at 7.30pm today.

The video was then shown at the FA Cup Final held on the 19th May 2007

Footage of missing Madeleine McCann will be screened at the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The DVD entitled Find Madeleine will be shown at the match between Chelsea and Manchester United, the FA said.

The film, made by the campaign to raise awareness of Madeleine’s disappearance in Portugal on 3 May, has already been shown at the Uefa Cup final.

  1. Hi,Bren.

about ” blue/green left eye and a green right eye with a brown mark in the pupil”

    I have some questions:

a passport photo is very small and seems much less than the nearly 4 years.

DNA is headed       N / A                     NOT APLICABLE.

    Group blood                               N / A  NOT APLICABLE

    What does N / A? NOT APLICABLE ?

And, I know that the parents were advised not to allow making public the particulars. To permit the investigation team spread everywhere the defect in the eye and the spot on his leg, I think the information was given to the PJ team, by the parents.

If included, it was because they so wanted, against the opinion of the Team PJ.

    Regards,

    Maria

  2. Hello Maria.

Not quite sure who you mean by the “PJ team”, as it was GA who asked the Ministerio Publico for permission to disseminate her photo/details (including the eye feature) on 4 May. If you look on the pj.pt site, this is standard practice for missing people in Portugal as it is in other countries. So who is supposed to have advised the parents not to do so? Or is this a media myth?

  3. *GA or someone who signed on his behalf. I’m not sufficiently familiar with his signature on regular PJ matters (as opposed to book autographs) to work out whether this is indeed his normal signature. In any case, someone from the PJ must have sent it and, as coordinator, I would presume he would be aware of the fact.

  4. Thanks for the mention, Bren. Still skimming through. I’ve come across something else…

  5. When I think about someone signing on his behalf they would have signed it pp and their signature or typed in Signed on behalf of Goncalo Amaral.

Thinking about it, I believe that is his signature.  Whether he was asked to sign this to get permission for the media leak and just signed and did not read I don’t know.

    • I’m aware of the pp (someone signing in the place of someone else) convention in certain cultures.

However, there might have been a different way of signalling that someone else had signed in absentia of the author.

Whatever. Even if someone signed in his place, I presume he was at least aware of the fact that the official ok was given on 5 May to disseminate the details.

  6. Don’t know. What other PJ docs did he sign? Book autographs could look neater.

My impression is that it IS his signature (what looks like a G… L, then an A).

To be fair, offhand, I can’t remember if GA ever actually stated that disseminating that info was dangerous. At least one supposedly credible PJ-related person did, as I mentioned earlier.

  7. Hit send button too fast.

The additional point is that making the eye detail public seems to have collected in some people’s residual memories as being a “fact” pointing to the parents’ involvement.

Whereas, the FACT is that the detail was made public via normal Portuguese authorities.

  8. It was Carlos Anjos as reported in the Daily Mail

But Portuguese police, whose investigations usually operate in secret, always opposed the publicity and did not even want the child’s photograph to be distributed.

Mr Anjos told Radio 4’s Inside Stories programme: “We thought that the photos should not show the distinct mark Madeleine had in her eye.

“From our experience of criminal investigations, if this was a kidnap – which is what we believed from the start – the revealing of such a distinct feature would put that person’s life in danger.”

  9. Bren, I’ll try to find the link, but I believe Carlos Anjos originally expressed roughly the same idea on PT Tv.

Just noticed: a certain female “profiler” is regurgitating the same old “eye” myth… What on earth does she base her “info” on?

  10. Quote:
“If the McCanns wanted to find the child alive, why did they push a campaign showing her eye defect which would insure her death? #McCann”

    End quote.

    Hmmm.

The Portuguese authorities approved the dissemination of this information on 5 May 2007, in response to a request from the PJ on 4 May.

The use of that detail in the McCann campaign came later, as far as I recall. From memory, it was featured in a logo later in May 2007 and was used in the “Don’t you forget about me” clip, but I can’t find the original video on youtube.

I have found at least one amateur montage clip  that dates back to August 2007 that uses the song… but I’m not sure how to substantiate my recollection before that.

  11. Tired of hunting for that detail. Doesn’t really matter. As far as I am aware,  the PT authorities authorized the release of that info BEFORE the parents used that detail in the well-known video clip.

Does anyone have any information to the contrary?

  12. Yes I am sure that video clip was first shown at the UEFA cup final on the 16th May 2007.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7370942.stm

I have found the Video and uploaded it to youtube

  13. It was actually Trish who’s first mentioned it briefly to the papers http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/leicestershire/6623127.stm but as far as I can see that was only once, her first interview.

There’s something else though. I can’t access the PJ site of missing persons to check it or post a link, I’m getting a strange error report. Could be my browser. But it’s on the Interpol site as well, another mark that’s not been mentioned in that press release.
    http://www.interpol.int/public/Data/Children/Missing/Notices/Data/2007/03/2007_23403.asp

  14. Thanks Cath, so Trish mentioned it in passing.  Now according to Kate’s book on the 4th from 10 am till gone 8.30 pm they were at the Police Station.  And that article was last updated at 16.33 gmt.

Now unless someone pointed that out, like you did, I wouldn’t have found that, that easy.  And I would not have thought it was that distinguishable from that description.

But the myth is the parents proceeded with highlighting this eye defect against the PJ advice.  Now that is a paper quote after speaking to Trish, it does not implicate or confirm the parents were behind this.

It is evident that the PJ were already using this as a distinguishing mark.

Yes I just tried the PJ site and it is down for some reason.

  15. I wish this could be translated

  17. Sorry, copy & paste came out a bit garbled.

Olhos: olho esquerdo azul e verde, olho direito verde com mancha castanha na íris

Don’t know if that was what you were looking for, Cath.

  18. I have attached a screenshot of the page

  19. Thank you Carana. It’s this part : “Pequeno sinal na pele, de cor castanha, no gémeo da perna esquerda” –> Small brown mark on the left leg calf. That’s not mentioned in the press release.

    Instead the PJ choose

to highlight uniquely identifying information, the mark in her eye, in the press release.

Carlos Anjos (who is a union man, not an investigator of this case) also said “We thought
that the photos should not show the distinct mark Madeleine had in
her eye.”Now look at that photo in the press release, what do you see?

  20. Yep, Cath, you’re right.

Of the two identifying features, the one that DID get mentioned in the PJ release was the eye one, and the one that DIDN’T was the more discreet one on her leg.

The mark on the leg subsequently got added in the Interpol release.

However… another detail had to be corrected. The original  PJ proposed release, signed in GA’s name and rubber-stamped the next day, stated that there was a mark in her pupil.  In the Interpol release this got corrected to iris…
The bottom line is still that the PJ union chap was on prime TV (and who, from memory of reading various forums at the time, was taken seriously by the baying masses)  insinuating that the parents had done totally the wrong thing by drawing attention to the eye fleck, supposedly AGAINST police advice. Now, who exactly was supposed to have advised against it as it is precisely that detail that was released by the PJ?
